How can you start working well?

Right now, we are working in partnership with Fellowes in order to promote the importance of ergonomics. Working Well Week is an existing initiative by Fellowes, in which we will be informing people on the implications of bad working habits and educate on how to stop the aches and pains and prevent any further damage.

A quarter of all British workers have taken time off work due to aches and pains – not just manual labourers either! Ailments such as backache, neck ache and tense shoulders are most likely to hit staff who spend their days working at a desk, in front of a computer screen. These problems don’t just affect individuals either… with sufferers taking up to 14 days off per year, it makes uncomfortable reading for businesses too.

By making a few simple adjustments to your workstation and ensuring you get up and walk around every now again, you will soon reap the benefits of working well.

It’s not just physical health you need to look out for either. For businesses, there are huge benefits to improving mental wellbeing amongst staff members – including improved productivity due to the improved staff harmony within the workplace, reduced absence and sick pay, along with increased profitability.

In order to raise the overall mental wellbeing within the office, you need to first outline the 5 pillars of wellbeing and assess what you need to do to benefit yourself;

  1. Supportive relationships (authentic connections)

Humans are social creatures, and building strong social relationships is a vital part of maintaining a good mental health.

Now obviously, being in a busy work environment can make it difficult to take the time to build an effective working relationship as we’re all busy with work, but if you are able to these are a few things that you can try to do in order to regularly benefit your mental health and work environment;

  • Talk to your colleagues instead of writing e-mails or calling them
  • Try speaking to new people, or someone you don’t usually engage with
  • Make an effort to ask people how they are, listen to their answer and talk to them
  • Offer colleagues a lift to work to get that extra bit of time to get to know them
  • Set aside some time at lunch to engage more with your co-workers

  1. Positive emotion (feeling good)

Now most people are aware that the best way to feel good is to release endorphins, right? So, our advice is to get active. The links between an active lifestyle and good mental health are clear – all of the evidence suggests doing regular physical activity helps reduce your chances of depression, anxiety and cognitive decline.

So in addition to joining a gym or sports team, there are plenty of ways to get that extra bit of exercise during your normal working day;

  • Walking to work, or walk to the shops instead of driving
  • Take a nice, long walk during your lunch hour and enjoy the scenery… you might like it!
  • Why not try taking the stairs instead of the lift?

  1. Engagement (finding flow)

In order to thrive in your work environment, you need to find your flow. It is important that in order to do this you need to pay attention and take notice. In today’s everyday life we rush around from one thing to another on autopilot and fail to notice our surroundings. Mindfulness is key as it equips you with more control and awareness over your own life. It enables better life management and improved decision making. This step not only boosts wellbeing but also makes you better able to cope with situations that are thrown your way.

  1. Achievement (sense of accomplishment)

So we’ve all heard the phrase ‘you learn something new every day’. Learning enables us to reach our full potential and so helps us to achieve and accomplish great things. Rather than be frustrated by our mistakes, we should appreciate when we mess up because it makes for awesome learning tools. The most important thing is that we are always open to learning and enhancing our knowledge. It’s an on-going process, no matter whether you think you know everything, you probably don’t. Learning is key to achievement, how ae you suppose to thrive when your knowledge is limited? Accomplishment always gives us a sense of relief and happiness, so why not try devoting some time to reading blogs or researching topics you’re interested in?

We all need to feel like we belong somewhere, and everyone does. With this pillar, it’s all about mindset. You need to have a positive attitude and believe you have a place. Every human being’s life has a meaning; it has a purpose. What’s important is that you put that purpose into practice and fulfill it. Remember, we can choose our own paths; so you make your own meaning in life and you live it. That way, you know your purpose in life is to fulfill your own chosen path.
